Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
According to Kleinschmidt [SK71], this stem has two related meanings; one avalent, and one monovalent:
- Avalent: 'it is saddening' (that/because something happened), optionally with the explanation given in the causative mood, or an object clause in the participial mood.
- Monovalent: 'it is saddening that
Actoris/will be lost/gone', i.e. with theActorindicating the thing that previously was a source of happiness. This could e.g. be a person who has died, or has left, or is about to leave. This usage is only described in Kleinschmidt [SK71], but not in teh newer dictionary Oqaatsit [CBBJRPIKJR97], so it is likely not used nowadays.
In either case, the stem is often used with V{-qə}V for emphasis. Note also the opposite meaning {alianaq}V + V{-it}V + V{IND.3sg} ⇒ alianaappoq, 'it is joyous'.
The stem derives from a base {*alia}, that does not exist independently in Kalaallisut. It is always used with an affix, either V{naq}V (i.e. the present stem); or V{-gə}V, cf. {aliagə}V.
