Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

The meaning of this stem is 'Agent meets Patient' or 'encounters' or similar. If the stem is used intransitively without a HTR morpheme, the meaning becomes reflexive: 'Agents=Patients meet/encounter each other' (with plural person markers).

Etymology and form
In both the new and the old orthography, this stem is spelt with a long [aa] sound, i.e. naapippaa. However, according to the Comparative Eskimo Dictionary [MFSJLK10], the reconstructed historical form is {nay(ə)pət-}, and in some of the other languages and /i/ vowel is present. Therefore, we here assume that the /y/ has become /i/ in these cases (which it appears to have done in some contexts), and we therefore include the /i/ in the form recorded here.
