Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

This affix is a non-productive, or only marginally productive, variant of N{(q)vasik}V, here in the sense of 'be in the N-direction'. According to Schultz-Lorentzen [16], it is used to denote 'a strong wind from the direction N'.

Inflection

Declension pattern:

Stem type: Regular k-stem
Declension type: p-declined
Declension sandhi: Default/none

Notes on declension:

The inflection is not described in any of the dictionaries. Presumably, the affix inflects like a regular k-stem with up-declension, since this is the most common, but in the absence of further evidence, we do not record an inflection pattern.

Meanings and examples

Where N is a stem indicating a direction.

  • saqqarpasik, strong, south-easternly wind [16]

From saqqaq, 'the front-side' or 'the sunny side', in this case apparently referring to a specific area in the Disco Bay.
