Form and usage:

This affix has two, related meanings:

It appears to mostly be used with avalent or monovalent stems, but Schultz-Lorentzen [16] and Ordbogeeraq [17] even give examples with divalent stems. There is also another affix, N{(q)vallak}V which is used on nominal stems with a somewhat related meaning.


Meanings and examples


  • toqorpallappoq, it is said that he is dead [16]

    From toquvoq, 'he is dead'.

  • tikippallappaa, it is said that he has arrived at it [16]

    From tikippaa, 'he has arrived at it' (i.e., a place). This is an example of transitive usage with this affix.

  • angerpallappoq, it is said that he agreed/said yes [19]
  • qimaarpallappoq, it is said that he has fled/escaped [19]

This can be in any mode of sensing; i.e. sight, hearing, feeling etc.

  • anerpallappoq, it is sensed (e.g. heard) that he goes out [19]
  • katappallappoq, it is sensed that it has fallen off [19]
  • qaangiuppallappoq, it is sensed that it is over [19]
