Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

The meaning of this affix denotes a sudden change of state, i.e. 'Subject suddenly becomes Vb'ing'. Hence, it seems to mostly be used with stems denoting a state of being. On stems denoting a transition, the meaning seems to just be 'suddenly'.

Left sandhi:

Note that this affix will inject /j/ rather than the default sound /v/, whenever an epenthetic consonant is required by phonotactics; i.e. when following [aa].

Meanings and examples

  • nikalluallappoq, he suddenly becomes dejected
    [4]

    From nikallorpoq, 'he becomes dejected/depressed'.

  • innaallappoq, it flashes/sparkles
    [4]

From innappoq, 'he gets/strikes fire'. This word is lexicalised. The meaning seems to be a sudden flash of light (as from fire). From the same stem we also have innaallagiaq, 'lightening'.

  • nuannaajallappoq, he suddenly becomes happy
    [4]

From nuannaarpoq, 'he is happy'. Here we see the epenthetic /j/ injected following [aa].

  • nikiallappoq, it (suddenly) moves a bit
    [8]

From nikippoq, 'it moves/is moved'. This is a transition stem, and here the meaning seems to be rather '(suddenly) a bit', rather than 'suddenly become'.
