Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

This affix is a variant of V{-ummiq}V, 'Subject suddenly becomes Vb'ing', which lengthens the preceding vowel sound, instead of having its own initial /u/. The two forms appear to be used interchangeably, according to the examples in Oqaatsit [13] . The present form does not appear to be mentioned in older dictionaries.

The affix appears to mainly (or only) be used with verbs stems denoting feelings, moods, emotions, to indicate that the Subject suddenly shifts that state of mind.

Left sandhi:

The affix is truncative and lengthens the preceding vowel sound. In principle, this will be indistinguishable from V{-ummiq}V in cases following [a] and [u], so the only real difference is in cases following [i].

Right sandhi:

The variant V{-ummiq}V has assibilation according to Ordbogeeraq [11] , so presumably the present affix does as well.

Meanings and examples

Mainly, or only, with stems denoting a feeling.

  • ersiimmerpoq, he suddenly feels afraid/frightened
    [13]

From ersiorpoq, 'he is afraid/frightened'. Compare ersiummerpoq with the variant V{-ummiq}V.

  • nilliimmerpoq, he suddenly lets out a small cry
    [13]

From nillerpoq, 'he lets out a cry'. Compare nilliummerpoq with the variant V{-ummiq}V.

  • tulluutiimmerpoq, he suddenly feels happy and proud
    [13]

From tulluuppoq, a t(ə)-stem, illustrating how the affix attaches to /ə/, since it is truncative. Compare tulluutiummerpoq with the variant V{-ummiq}V.
