Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

According to Nielsen [8], the meaning of this affix is 'Subject has begun to Vb a little', and it is used with some transitional stems. The first component of this affix seems to be V{-aq}V in the sense of 'a little'. According to Ordbogeeraq [12], the second component is V{caaq}V, although this makes no sense w.r.t. the meaning. Thus, this may be spurious.

Meanings and examples

Seemingly only with stems that mean 'has become'.

  • taarsiarsaarpoq, dusk has come [14]

From taarsivoq, 'it has become darkness', so literally: 'it has become a little dark'.

  • unnuarsaarpoq, it is early evening [14]

From unnuppoq, 'it is (become) evening', so literally: 'it has become a little evening'.

  • utoqqaliarsaarpoq, he isn't exactly young any more [14]

From utoqqalivoq, 'he has become old', seemingly with V{li}V, so literally 'he has become a little old'.
