Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

This is a straightforward combination of V{-vik}V{ŋŋit}V, meaning 'not really'. The meaning is quite obvious from the constituents; however, the ordering of these two affixes is uncommon. Thus, we record it as a separate affix- Note that the reverse combination, V{ŋŋit}V{-vik}V, is also possible, but this combination instead means 'not at all'.

The second constituent of V{-viŋŋit}V is the negation affix V{ŋŋit}V, so the combination therefore inherits the same idiosyncratic sandhi behaviour as this affix; thus, see it for a description. Note that although this affix is valency preserving, and hence can appear with transitive endings, there is no HTR-stem, since any HTR-morpheme would be added before this affix.

Right sandhi:

Right sandhi is inherited from the right-most component, V{ŋŋit}V. See this for details.

Inflection sandhi:

Inflection sandhi is inherited from the right-most component, V{ŋŋit}V. See this for details.

Meanings and examples

See also the reverse combination, V{ŋŋivik}V, which has a somewhat different meaning, thus illustrating the importance of affix ordering.

  • paasivinngilara, I don't really understand it

From paasivara, 'I understand it'. Compare also paasinngivippara, 'I do not understand it at all', with the reverse ordering of the two constituents.
