Form and usage:

This affix is a straightforward combination of V{naq}V, 'it is Vb'able', and V{-gə}V, 'find it (too) Vb'ing'; or, equivalently V{naq}N, 'something that is such as to Vb', and N{-gə}V, 'have as'. We shall here prefer the first interpretation, since it seems to fit better with the meaning, but Kleinschmidt [13] and Schultz-Lorentzen [16] prefer the latter. Regardless, the meaning is: 'Agent finds Patient Vb'able'.


Meanings and examples

  • qiianaraa, he finds it (freezing) cold; he thinks one must be freezing there [13]

    From qiiavoq, 'he feels cold/freezes'.

  • tupinnaraa, he finds it surprising [13]

    Or: 'he thinks that one must be surprised by it'. From tupigaa, 'he is surprised by it'. Here, the affix has elided /ə/ and attached directly to /g/, thus giving the double consonant.

  • kajungernaraa, he finds it attractive [13]

    From kajungerpoq, 'he is attracted (to something)'.
