Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

This is a straightforward combination of V{tqucau}V, i.e. V{tqu}V, V{-ðaq}N, and N{-u}V, and then V{ŋŋit}V, denoting 'Patient is forbidden to Vb (by someone=Agent)'.

Right sandhi:

Right sandhi is inherited from the right-most component, V{ŋŋit}V. See this for details.

Inflection sandhi:

Inflection sandhi is inherited from the right-most component, V{ŋŋit}V. See this for details.

Meanings and examples

Only with monovalent stems, according to Nielsen [8].

  • aneqqusaanngilaq, he must not go out; he is forbidden to go out [8]

From anivoq, 'he exits; goes out'.

  • atoqqusaanngilaq, it must not be used [8]

From atorpaa, 'he uses it'. Note that this is a patientive stem, i.e. atorpoq, 'it is used', so it seems that the stem has dropped its Agent role before this affix.

  • ammarneqaqqusaanngilaq, it must not be opened; it is forbidden to open it [8]

From ammarpaa, 'he opens it' and the passivising affix V{nəqaq}V.
