Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

The meaning of this affix is 'Subject (unfortunately/unexpectedly) happened not to Vb', indicating that the verbal action did not take place, although it was expected to. This affix is a combination of the negation affix V{ŋŋit}V and V{ðuuq}V, 'Vb unfortunately/unexpectedly'. In this combination /tð/ have become /tc/ as expected, thus giving the present form. Note that if the affix is negated again, the meaning becomes 'definitely Vb'.

Meanings and examples

  • agginngitsoorpoq, he did not come (even though he was expected to) [14]

    From aqqgerpoq, 'he comes/arrives'.

  • atuanngitsoorpoq, he was not at school (today) [14]

I.e., he was expected to be at school, but did not show up. From atuarpoq, here in the sense of 'he is at school'.

  • pinngitsoornanga aggissaanga, I shall definitely come

From the dummy base {pi}V, giving the pure meaning of the affix, and with the negative contemporative 1sg ending V{naŋa}, thus negating the meaning of the affix.
