Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

This affix means 'go (somewhere) in order to Vb'. Thus, it is synonymous with one of the two meanings of the affix V{(gi)jaqtuq}V, to which it also may be related according to the Comparative Eskimo Dictionary.


Left sandhi:

The affix appears to be regularly additive today. However, previously, it appears to have been truncative on some consonant stems (but not q-stems), but it is not clear which. There are examples in Nielsen [8] with truncative behaviour on both k-stems and t-stems, e.g.

In other cases, it appears that it can either be additive or truncative. For example:

It may be that it once was truncative on one type of stems, but not on the other, but after these two stem types became all but indistinguishable due to assimilation, it became entirely random whether the affix was additive or truncative on consonant stems.

This meaning is the same as one of the meanings of V{(gi)jaqtuq}V.

    From {annak}V, 'Actor was saved', so literally 'he goes somewhere to be saved'.

    From {nuniak}V, 'Actor gathers berries'.

  • naapigiarpaa, he goes to meet him [8]

    From {naapət}V, 'Agent meets Patient'.

  • ataatsimiikkiarpoq; ataatsimiigiarpoq, he goes to a meeting [8]

    From ataatsimiipoq, 'he is at a meeting'. This is a t-stem, *{ət}V.

  • qitikkiarpoq; qitigiarpoq, he goes somewhere to dance [8]
