Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

This affix is a straightforward combination of V{ssa}V and V{-ŋa}V, but with a rather different meaning: 'Subject expects to Vb', or more elaborated: 'Subject thinks that he=Subject shall Vb'. If the Subject must be different from the Subject of the verbal base, V{tət}V must be added; cf. the combination V{ssaŋatət}V.


Meanings and examples

The meaning 'have to' will not always be appropriate, depending on the meaning of the stem.

  • pisarissangavaa, he expects to get it (the catch) [13]

    From pisaraa, 'he gets/catches it'.

  • sapissangavoq, he thinks he will be incapable (of doing something) [13]

    From saperpoq, 'he is incapable; he is unable' (to do something).

  • aallassangavoq, he expects to (have to) travel/depart [16]

    From aallarpoq, 'he travels/departs'.

  • atussangavaa, he expects to (have to) use it [16]

    From atorpaa, 'he uses it'.

  • inissangavoq, he expects to finish [19]

    From inerpoq, 'he is done; he has finished'.

  • perlissangavoq, he is afraid of starving to death [16]

    From perlerpoq, 'he starves to death'; i.e. literally 'he expects to starve to death' (and hence, he is afraid).
