This affix denotes 'suddenly, unexpectedly'. According to the Comparative Eskimo Dictionary [MFSJLK10], it derives from a morpheme {ʀataʀ-}, which is the origin of the affix V{-ataaq}V. This appears to have attached to V{-riaq}V and causing the final /aq/ to drop.
