Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

The meaning of this stem is 'Agent works hard on Patient' or 'concentrates' or 'focuses' etc. Kleinschmidt [SK71] also adds 'hurries with it' (in order to get the work quickly finished), but this meaning is not given in later dictionaries such as Oqaatsit [CBBJRPIKJR97], and it seems to contradict the meaning of 'making a serious, concentrated effort'.

Etymology
This stem is not listed in the Comparative Eskimo Dictionary [MFSJLK10], so the etymology is unclear. Kleinschmidt [SK71] suggests that it is from {aula}V, 'move around', although it is not clear how this should give rise to the present meaning. The second part is not explained, but given the form of the HTR-stem, aallussivoq, listed in Oqaatsit [CBBJRPIKJR97], it is clear that this must be a t(ə)-stem. Therefore, it seems that the second morpheme must be V{-(cc)ut(ə)}V, which (non-standardly) has removed the final /a/ from the preceding stem.
