Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
This stem is a lexicalised combination of {pujuq}V, 'emit smoke', and the non-productive morpheme V{-uq}V denoting a longer duration. It has both an intransitive and a transitive usage:
- Intransitive: '
Actorsmokes' or 'emits smoke' (consistently, i.e. for a longer duration), e.g. a chimney. - Transitive: '
AgentsmokesPatient', i.e. meat, fish etc. for preserving it.
It is unclear whether the transitive usage is patientive or reflexive, but Oqaatsit [CBBJRPIKJR97] gives a HTR-stem, so it is clearly not agentive.
Notable forms:
-
HTR:
{pujuuq}V + V{ði}V ⇒ /pujuuri/
The HTR-stem is regularly formed with weakening of /q/ to /r/ after /VV/. It is mentioned in Oqaatsit [CBBJRPIKJR97].
-
Passive participle:
{pujuuq}V + V{-ðaq}N ⇒ /pujuugaq/
The passive participle form is regular. It is mentioned in Ordbogeeraq [JP67].
