Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

This stem is a combination of the non-productive base {əlit}V, '(has) learned', and V{niaq}V, 'intend/strive to'. Thus, the literal meaning of this stem is 'he strives/intends to learn (it/something)'. This fits well with the definition given by Kleinschmidt [SK71]: 'he seeks to learn something; he attends a lecture/course'. However, the Oqaatsit dictionary [CBBJRPIKJR97] gives a slightly different definition: 'he studies (something)', either in the sense of 'he attends a course in something' or 'he is doing his homework'.

According to Kleinschmidt, the stem can be used both transitively and intransitively. However, in the newer Oqaatsit dictionary, it is only listed with an intransitive ending. Hence, it is likely not commonly used transitively nowadays. Nevertheless, we record it as agentive to allow for the transitive usage as well.

I.e. 'he strives to learn = he studies'.

  • kalaallisut ilinniarpoq, he studies Greenlandic

Normally, the object would be given in the instrumental case, but this is not possible with a word such as {kalaallisut}, since it already has an ending.
