Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

This particle is the anaphoric, exclamatory form of the demonstrative stem {uv}D, where the addition of the anaphoric prefix {ta(ð)}* has suppressed the gemination of /v/, that D{a}. The literal meaning is therefore something like 'this here (aforementioned)'. However, it is always used in a rather different sense: 'then' or 'so' or 'thereafter' etc.


Meanings and examples

  • ajorata apuukkutta taava, when we have safely arrived (at the place) then (...) [SK71]
  • taava takussaarpara, then (suddenly) I do not see him anymore [SK71]
  • taavaaku nunguttut, now there are (suddenly) no more of them [SK71]

    Here with the plural form of the enclitic *{una}, 'they are ...'.
