Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
This is a straightforward combination of V{-riaq}V and V{galuaq}V denoting 'Subject tries unsuccessfully to Vb'.
The latter affix seems to add the sense of 'unsuccessfully'.
According to Nielsen [8], V{ðaq}V, 'repeatedly' may optionally be injected between the two components, i.e. -riartaraluar-, and the combination then denotes 'tries repeatedly unsuccessfully', i.e. with several unsuccessful attempts. We do not record this as a separate combination, since it does not appear in any other dictionaries.
Meanings and examples
- suleriaraluarpoq, he tried unsuccessfully to work
[8]
From sulivoq, 'he works'.
- isornartorsioriaraluarpaa, he tried unsuccessfully to criticise it
[8]
From isornartorsiorpaa, 'he criticises it'.
- pulariartaraluarpoq, he tried (several times) unsuccessfully to crawl in
[8]
From pulavoq, 'he crawls in'. This is the only example Nielsen gives with V{ðaq}V.
