Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

This is a combination of V{-(cc)ut(ə)}V and V{(q)cuq}V, where /tc/ assimilate to /cc/ (just like with the HTR-morpheme {ði}). Given the meaning of this affix, it only makes sense with (object) endings in plural.

The left-most morpheme is V{-ut(ə)}V, so this morpheme may cause a preceding /aq/ to drop from the stem or otherwise join onto the stem in an irregular fashion. See V{-ut(ə)}V for further notes on the left-sandhi behaviour.

Left sandhi:

Left sandhi is inherited from the left-most component, V{-(cc)ut(ə)}V. See this for details.

Right sandhi:

Right sandhi is inherited from the right-most component, V{(q)cuq}V. See this for details.

Inflection sandhi:

Inflection sandhi is inherited from the right-most component, V{(q)cuq}V. See this for details.

Meanings and examples

Or 'one by one' etc.

  • majuussorpai, he brings them up, one by one

    From majuarpoq with aq-drop.

  • qilerussorpai, he binds them, one by one

From qilerpaa, 'he binds it'. The base is {qiləq}V, and here /q/ is not removed because of the preceding /ə/.

  • aallarussorpai, he kidnaps them, one by one

From aallarpoq, with weakening of the final /q/ (irregularly formed).
