Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

The affix is only used on adjectival stems describing a state of being. It has two different meanings:

The affix is valency-increasing, by adding a new Agent role: the Actor role of the stem is mapped to the Patient role of the affix. A HTR-form is mentioned in Kleinschmidt [9], but according to the Comparative Eskimo Dictionary [16], the affix can also be used intransitively in the sense 'Agent Vb more than expected'. However, that dictionary does not give any examples of this usage.


Left sandhi:

Some examples in Kleinschmidt [9] and Schultz-Lorentzen [11] show that this affix may elide /ə/ on a preceding stem. This is also the explanation for the secondary form in the old orthography, -ngnârpâ, which is found in cases where an /ə/ has been elided; for example angnârpâ from angivoĸ.


Meanings and examples

Often in the sense of 'too Vb'ing'.

  • annaarpaa, he finds it bigger than expected [11]

    Lexicalised, from {aŋə}V, 'Actor is big', with elision of final /ə/.

  • silinarpaa, he finds it too broad [11]

    From silippoq, 'it is broad/thick'. Here we see that the affix is truncative.

  • minnaarpaa, he finds it smaller than expected [14]

    Lexicalised, from {mikə}V, 'Actor is small', with elision of final /ə/.

  • saamanaarpaa, he found him (to be) friendlier than expected [11]

    From saamavoq, 'he is friendly'.

Also in a sense of 'more than expected'.

  • annaarpaa, he made it too big [11]

    Lexicalised, from {aŋə}V, 'Actor is big', with elision of final /ə/.

  • qutsinaarpaa, he placed it too high up [11]

    From qutsippoq, 'it is placed high up'.
