Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
This is a non-productive, or only marginally productive, affix. It is found in a number of lexicalised combinations, but it is seemingly not used productively in day-to-day word formation.
The meaning is: 'Subject Vb repeatedly'.
Kleinschmidt [9] elaborates that it it expresses repetition, however not like V{ðaq}V, but such that the verbal action is perceived as consisting of a collection of multiple smaller actions.
Furthermore, on stems indicating a state of being, the affix can apparently also indicate an extended period. See also the variant form V{(q)cuq}V.
Notable forms:
-
HTR-form:
V{tuq}V + V{ði}V ⇒ /tui/
This HTR-form arises in cases where the present affix is added before a HTR-morpheme, i.e. where the combination of the stem with this affix is lexicalised.
Meanings and examples
On stems indicating a state of being, it can apparently also indicate an extended period.
- simissorpaa, he plugs it carefully
[14]
From simippaa, old orthography, simigsorpâ, 'he puts a plug in it', e.g. a bottle. Note, the base is actually {simək}V (historically), but it nevertheless seems to have assibilated the /t/ to /s/. We can see that it indeed is the present affix, and not the variant, V{(q)cuq}V, because the old-orthography spelling has 'gs' and not 'gss'.
- ulissorpaa, he covers it carefully
[14]
From {ulik}V, i.e. ulippaa, 'he covers it'. Here, 'carefully' reflects the meaning of the present affix, i.e. that he is performing the action multiple times. The /t/ is assibilated to /s/ by the true /i/ in the stem.
- pisatsersorpaa, he equips it with spare parts
[14]
From pisataq, 'component; spare part' and N{-liq}V which has caused a drop of the final /VC/ from the stem, and with compensatory gemination of /t/ to /tc/. The true /i/ in that affix has then caused assibilation of the /t/ to /s/ in the present affix.
