Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

This affix is a straightforward combination of V{niaq}V, 'intends to' and V{-liq}V, 'begin to'. Thus, the literal meaning is 'begins to intend to Vb'. However, the combination is used to express a slightly different meaning: 'Subject sets about to Vb' or 'is about to Vb'. Nielsen [8] adds that the affix can be made even more immediate with V{-qə}V in the sense of 'is just about to'.

Meanings and examples

With V{-qə}V, the meaning becomes more immediate: 'is just about to Vb'.

  • aternialerpoq, he sets about to go down [14]

    From aterpoq, 'he goes down'.

  • kamannialerpoq, (it looks like) he is about to get angry [14]

    From kamappoq, 'he is angry'.

  • sulinialerpoq, he sets about to work; he wants to start working [14]

    From sulivoq, 'he works'.

  • katinnialerput, they are about to marry (get married) [8]

    From katipput, 'they marry/get married'.

  • qimannialeqaa, he is just about to leave her [8]

From qimappaa, 'he leaves her', with V{-qə}V for emphasis.
