Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
This is the productive variant of N{-li}V, meaning 'Actor makes N'.
It seems to have been formed by combination with V{-uq}V, but seemingly with no change in meaning.
According to Nielsen [FAJN19], this affix can also form a passive participle with V{-ðaq}N, despite being monovalent.
It appears that the incorporated N is viewed as the logical Patient of the action, and the resulting passive participle therefore refers to this N; i.e. the meaning becomes 'a made N'.
This seems to have been inherited from N{-li}V, which can also form such a 'passivised noun'.
See Passive incorporation for a list of affixes that behave similarly.
Left sandhi:
Left sandhi is inherited from the left-most component, N{-li}V. See this for details.
Notable forms:
-
Passive participle:
N{-liuq}V + V{-ðaq}N ⇒ /-liugaq/
The stem is regularly formed, according to the left-sandhi rules of V{-ðaq}N. See the example section for some examples of its usage.
Meanings and examples
This can be both in the sense of 'build/create', but also 'make/prepare/process' with e.g. foods.
- kaagiliorpoq, he makes/bakes a cake
- kaffiliorpoq, he makes coffee
- illuliorpoq, he builds a house
[CWSL58]
- neqiliorpoq, he prepares/cooks seal meat
[CWSL58]
- nerisassiorpoq, he makes/prepares food
[CWSL58]
The base is nerisassaq, where the final morpheme is the nominal future affix N{kcaq}N. Here we see the affix having deleted the final /aq/, just like N{-li}V may do.
- imertaasiorpoq, he makes a bucket
[CWSL58]
From {əməqtautə}N (imertaat), 'water bucket'. Here we see the affix having caused replacivity of /təl/ ⇒ /s/.
- Nukissiorfiit, The name of the company providing electricity in Greenland
From nukissaq, '(future) electric power'. The final morpheme is nominal future affix N{kcaq}N, where the affix causes aq-drop.
- qaanniorpoq, he makes a kayak
[CWSL58]
From {qajaq}N, where the affix causes /aq/ to drop, which triggers compensatory gemination in the stem. Note that this stem displays a very uncommon kind of gemination /qaj-/ ⇒ /qainn-/.
- iffiugaq, pastry
[FAJN19]
From iffiorpoq, 'he bakes something', originally from {əvək}N, 'blade of grass', with the present affix causing VC-deletion and gemination or metathesis. This is an example of the passive participle form.
- erinniugaq, (musical) composition
[FAJN19]
from erinaq, 'melody/tune', here with VC-deletion and gemination of /n/. This is an example of the passive participle form.
- kaffiliukkat, coffee-beans that have been made/prepared (i.e. roasted and ground)
[FAJN19]
Here in plural, causing gemination of /g/. This is an example of the passive participle form.
