Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

This is a non-productive affix, found in some common, lexicalised words. The meaning is: 'Agent finds Patient enjoyable to Vb'.

The affix appears to be a combination of V{naq}V, 'it is Vb'able', and V{-gə}V, 'find it (too) Vb'ing'. However, there also appears to be another morpheme at the beginning of this affix, which causes the injection of an extra consonant, when the affix is used on vowel stems. This may be by influence from V{(n)naaq}V and V{(n)niq}V, to which it seems to be related, since it appears to only be used on stems from which words are also derived with these two affixes.

Note that the straightforward combination of V{naq}V and V{-gə}V also exists, and that combination is used productively, but without the 'enjoyable' sense; see V{narə}V. The corresponding form mentioned in Kleinschmidt [9] appears to be in that general sense, but includes the usage described here, whereas the entry in Schultz-Lorentzen [11] is for this more narrow/specialised meaning indicated by the present affix.

Meanings and examples

Or 'Agent enjoys to Vb Patient'.

  • tusarnaraa, he likes to hear/listen to it [11]

From tusarpaa, 'he hears it'. Compare tusarnaarpaa, 'he listens to it' and tusarnerpoq, 'it is enjoyable to listen to'.

  • nuannaraa, he enjoys it [11]

The base is not used on its own, but compare nuannaarpoq, 'he is happy', and nuannerpoq, 'it is enjoyable'.

  • pinnaraa, he finds her beautiful [9]

From the dummy base {pi}V, giving the pure meaning of the affix. Compare pinnerpoq, 'she is beautiful'.
